Ha'way! The great Newcastle Upon Tyne YAP

Updated: Mar 28, 2022

Welcome back

Ha'way lads and lasses and welcome to the 4th instalment of the YAP series, feel like we've come a long way, almost hitting the 1-month mark. First off just wanted to say thank you to everyone who has been keeping up and reading the blogs, I've got to say I've enjoyed every minute of writing these and their are more to come! If you have any feedback to give me on how to improve these blogs to make them better for you then feel welcome to message the socials or comment below on what you feel. Anyway lets get into this

A social delight

One thing I got told before I went to Newcastle is that the people are very welcoming and you know what they are the most lovely people you will ever meet. On my first trip there we had to get a taxi into town since we stayed in a hotel just outside and the fella who picked us up was great, he was giving us a tour guided experience where he pointed us in the directions of landmarks and talked about the history of the town. It was a very insightful journey and even well we were in town it was so easy to talk to people, the city was just a delight to walk around and made the time we spent there so much better.

An electric atmosphere at St James

For all you football fans this is a must, my first trip to Newcastle was with a good friend of mine Jack and

he's a Newcastle fan so it was pretty obvious that we had to go and watch them play. Now being a football

fan myself although I'm not a big fan of Newcastle, I will give it to the fans in the stadium that day, for a Premier League game against Southampton the atmosphere was unreal at St James Park. To the point where even I was cheering Newcastle on, the passion, the attitude, the Joy and even the sheer disappointment right at the end just filled you with the emotions and on that day only then did I feel like a fan of the club. Of course, that is until I left and the feeling faded but to sit in the Gallowgate stand and watch the game with some of the die hard fans was simply a joyous occasion.

Drinking Geordie style

Now people say that Geordies are the best people to drink with, now I can't personally say whether that is true or not but everyone is different, on my night out unfortunately I was quite ill so it had to be cut short although I did not leave without a fight. A good start for most people well for me at the time was a good 'ol trip to the Casino where I won £20. Now whether you really decide to go chances are it will be pretty expensive, if Newcastle known for one thing other than Greggs it's the prices, we went to the Alchemist which is pretty expensive in general to get some Cocktails. Now personally I do not rate the Alchemist because the drinks are not just sickly but they are very pricey, we ended up going to a club called flair. Now before I discuss the club a little disclaimer, we went on a Saturday and as we were going back to the hotel to get changed at 7 O'clock people were already getting ready to go out, the streets were packed with people prepared for a night out at 7PM! As stated before after The Alchemist we went to a club called flair, now first thing to bear in mind at this point is that we had already spent a lot of money and it was £8 to get in so we were pretty cautious. As we were at the bar waiting I was thinking that the club we were in seemed very similar to a club I'd been in before and it turns out it was there version of Reflex in Stoke which as said in the last YAP was a 70's 80's 90's 00's club. My initial thoughts would have been that the drinks would be pretty cheap but god was I wrong for a bottle of Peroni and a Double rum and coke it came to £18. This may be different in other clubs I was gob smacked at the prices they charged for drinks.

The Angel of the North

It would be pretty rude to not go and visit the wonderful architecture which is The Angel of the North, if by chance you get some free time well you are there then I would definitely recommend going and having a look at this marvel of creation. It is a landmark worth visiting with information plaques around the area telling you the history of the statue and how it was built with some pretty good photos. It is only a 10 minute drive away from the centre and you can get some good photos well you are there like the on I got below.

Things to consider for your journey

Driving up to Newcastle from down south can be quite the challenge, from Staffordshire it took me 4 hours to drive there including traffic, be very mindful of certain roads on your journey there. When I travelled to Newcastle I was astounded by how long you have to drive on the A1, I was on there for 64 miles and with no services either you have to just keep going until you reach the A184. So I would advise anyone who wants to go to stop of before if you need to, although the drive is nice with plenty of nice sights it can be quite the challenge.

Conclusion

So if you are thinking about possibly having a trip up North or down South depending where you are from, Newcastle is a place I would definitely recommend visiting as it is a trip that you won't forget unless you get hammered well you are then maybe you will forget it then. But generally speaking I really enjoyed my time there and can not wait to go again! As for giving a rating, well it's clear to me that Newcastle gets a solid 8, although it is pricey I feel it is a must go even if it's just for a day. You can always go for a Greggs.

Thank you for reading :)
